Alopecia is the general medical term for hair loss. Thus, there are several variants of the condition, including some diseases.
The names of the diseases are usually better known than the meaning of the word alopecia.
Some of the conditions and diseases that bear the name alopecia are:
- Androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness)
- Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss)
- Alopecia totalis (hair loss on the entire head)
- Alopecia universalis (hair loss on the entire body)
- Alopecia barbae (patchy hair loss in the beard)
