Symmetrical hair loss

We see many different people with different degrees of hair loss every day. It can be young people who have started to lose hair due to medication or older people who have lost hair due to increasing age.

But it is fascinating to see that almost always the thinning or hair loss is symmetrical on the head. Both sides – both temples or both sides of the head.

But then come the exceptions when only one side of the head has suffered a severe thinning.

These cases are very difficult to diagnose as they never involve genetic factors or so-called hereditary hair loss. These are always symmetrical.

We have very good contacts at Karolinska Hospital and Huddinge Hospital, whom we often consult in unusual cases to see if there is any other disease in the body that can cause asymmetrical hair loss.

Often we end up with possible scenarios, but not always.
