A hair transplant usually involves taking groups of hair follicles (grafts) from the neck and moving them to the transplant area.

This technique is called the FUE technique and is the one we work with at Nordic Hair Clinic. However, not all people have enough hair in their neck to make a successful hair transplant.

Then there is a variant of the FUE technique called Body Hair Transplant.

With the FUE technique, it is perfectly possible to take hair from other parts of the body and move it to the head. When doing a body hair transplant, hair is usually taken from the chest.

There are various scenarios in which a body hair transplant may be appropriate:

  • If the donor area in the neck does not have enough grafts left after a previous hair transplant to provide enough hair follicles.
  • A body hair transplant can be used to cover scars on the neck that may have been caused by old transplant techniques such as the FUT method.
  • If you have too thin hair on your neck for us to remove hair follicles from there while maintaining a natural result on the donor area as the hair grows out.
  • When you have significantly more chest hair than normal and would rather take grafts from there than your neck.

The difference between Body Hair Transplant and regular FUE

Hair technicians like to avoid taking hair from parts of the body other than the head. The preference is based on the fact that it is much more difficult to extract healthy grafts from other parts of the body.

The skin on the scalp is thinner, which makes it easier to extract hair follicles from it without damaging the graft during extraction.

The skin in the breast is noticeably softer, making it more difficult to get a healthy graft out. However, it is entirely possible with the right technical skill.

The grafts that can best be taken from somewhere other than the neck come from the chest. This is why we prefer to do body hair transplants with grafts from there.

You should be aware that the quality of hair on other parts of the body differs from the hair on your head.

This may cause the hair transplanted with a body hair transplant to have a different texture than your existing hair on your head – at first.

However, this does not impair the quality of the hair follicle, nor does it impede healing.
