Tell us about your work in Istanbul
I’ve worked with hair transplants in Istanbul since 2003. I’ve had my own hair transplant clinic for 13 years and now I am the medical director for Nordic Hair Istanbul.
I didn’t plan on working in the hair transplant industry. One day I read in the newspaper that a clinic was looking for doctors to perform hair transplants and I applied for the job. I got the job and stayed at that clinic for 3 years. In 2004 I was one of the first doctors to begin with micro motor FUE technique in Turkey.
How do you work with the FUE technique?
I always like to be the best and to do the best I can. If the donor area is good, the patient is happy, the transplant is successful, then I am happy. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beard transplant, eyebrow transplant or hair transplant.
Most of the time, I prefer to do all the steps of a transplantation myself. Extracting the follicles, making the channels and transplanting the grafts. I especially prefer to use the short punch for FUE. I think I might be the only one using it in Turkey. I use the short punch because when we use a long punch, we damage the skin and blood vessels in the scalp slightly, which increases the risk for infection and patients feel more pain after the operation. With short punch, the patient feels little to no pain and the scar tissue is minimum. We are using the same technique in Sweden now as we do in Istanbul.
What do you see happening in the hair transplant industry in the future?
I don’t think we can develop the FUE hair transplant technique further. We are already at the top of this technique. I think cloning hair follicles is going to be the next big thing. They are working on it and maybe we’re going to see it in the next 5 or 10 years.
You are a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Society (ISHRS). Tell us more about the association.
I’ve been a member for 10 years. It’s very important because ISHRS don’t accept just anybody into the association. It is an important society for the hair transplant business all over the world. I am also a member of the European Hair Research Society, EHRS. It is especially important for patients who are coming from other countries to Turkey. Then you always need to make sure that the hair technician is a member of a hair transplant society. It’s very important.
On the hair society website, the patients can see our names and see if we have a membership in the society or not. Two doctors have to recommend you to the society in order to be able to get a membership.

What is the most important step when it comes to transplanting hair?
Every step is as important as the other. Taking the follicles is important because you have to be careful so you don’t damage the follicles. You have to extract the follicle without cutting the roots or damaging the roots. The first step is very important.
Likewise, creating the channels are very important. They have to be deep enough for the grafts and they can’t be too big.
Every patient is different. None is the same as the other. Everyone differs from age, man or woman and how good the donor area is.
