PRP treatment for skin and face
To a certain degree, the skin is affected by both genetic and environmental factors, but with time, the collagen production and the skin’s cell renewal decreases. This results in the skin wrinkling and losing its glow. With a PRP treatment, also called the vampire facial, we are able to stimulate the collagen production so that the cell renewal speeds up. PRP for the skin may be performed on face, neck, décolletage or hands.
PRP for the skin helps with
- Smoother skin.
- More even pigmentation.
- More luster.
- Reduction of scars from, for example, acne.
- Accelerated healing.
- Increased collagen production.

How a treatment works
Treatment for PRP skin always starts with application of numbing cream on the area to be treated. The numbing cream will take approximately 45 minutes before we can start the treatment. Blood is drawn from the patient and centrifuged to separate the blood in different layers.
After that, blood plasma is drawn into 1 mm thin syringes to be injected shallowly into the skin. Finally, we apply an aloe vera face mask to soothe and moisturize the skin. We usually recommend 3 PRP treatments performed every four weeks to start with. This is so that the positive process of collagen formation of PRP will begin. Thereafter, one treatment every six months will be sufficient for maintaining the positive effect. The entire treatment takes approximately 2 hours.
PRP treatment for skin starts with a consultation
Before you start your treatment, it is important that you visit one of our clinics in Stockholm or Gothenburg for a consultation. You will be asked to fill out a declaration of health, we will examine your skin and discuss your prospects. The results of PRP are highly individual as everyone has different circumstances. During a consultation, we are more easily able to estimate which results you may expect to see from a PRP skin treatment.
Results after plasma treatment
The plasma containing growth factors is often a clear yellow and is injected evenly across the skin. The result will never be asymmetrical or lumpy as may occur with a filler-treatment. A week or two after treatment, the skin will have a significantly improved glow and oftentimes the skin will have tightened somewhat so that a few small wrinkles disappear.
Wrinkles are due to the lack of collagen and elastin and the skin dimples or furrows. If the wrinkles or creases are smaller, PRP can make the skin produce more collagen and thereby lift/fill the crease and the wrinkle will be smaller. If the wrinkle is too deep, PRP may improve but not fully restore the wrinkle.
Lines in the face will soften and the skin will have an improved luster. It will take a month or so before the body starts producing more collagen, but an improved glow shows relatively quickly and is something everyone experiences.
PRP treatment of acne scars
When treating acne scarring, we first use a dermaroller for optimal results. The dermaroller creates small puncture wounds in the skin. The body’s healing process is triggered and the body starts producing collagen to rebuild the punctured skin. At the same time, the PRP treatment accelerates the collagen production and loosens up the scar tissue. The result is a less deep and visible scar.
Refrain from omega-3
Before a PRP skin treatment it is important that the patient refrains from food rich in omega-3, such as fish, chia seeds and avocado, at least 3 days before treatment. Omega-3 increases the risk of bruising, which, in itself, is not dangerous, but can be esthetically displeasing for the patient. Also avoid ibuprofen as it acts as a blood-thinner and makes one bleed more. This can create small blood spots under the skin during a PRP treatment, which, again, is not dangerous but can be visually displeasing.
FAQ on PRP treatment
The treatment is safe and natural as it is your own blood being used. There may be some redness that appears right after the treatment but it disappears within a couple of hours. You can go back to your everyday activities immediately after the treatment.
It is very individual. Some people don’t notice a difference at all while others may experience a slight redness, but this redness usually calms down throughout the rest of the day. You will be able to carry out your usual day-to-day activities immediately after the treatment.
A slight redness might present itself immediately after the treatment. The redness usually disappears within a couple of hours. In the meantime, we recommend that you avoid wearing makeup in order to not irritate the skin. Besides that, you can return to your ordinary activities immediately after the treatment.
How quickly you can see results vary from person to person. Some see a difference only hours after the treatment, while others see results after a few days or need more than one session to see the full results.
Do not take any omega-3 tablets or foods rich in omega-3, such as fish and avocado, 3 days before your treatment. Omega-3 is blood-thinning and makes bruising easier which is extra important to avoid during a PRP skin treatment.
Drink water before your treatment. If you are dehydrated it will be harder to draw blood from you.
Refrain from ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is blood-thinning. Therefore, avoid taking ibuprofen up to 48 hours before your treatment. Pain killers containing paracetamol are fine.
