how it starts
What causes hair loss?
Losing hair normally occurs in several stages over a long period of time. However, if the hair loss is caused by a disease, it can happen very quickly.
As we get older, there is a gradual change in the hair follicle. The hair follicle shrinks and the production of hair strands is reduced. Eventually, the hair follicle becomes so stunted that hair strands fall off.
At the same time, the anagen growth phase (lifespan of the hair strand) becomes shorter with age. When we are younger, the growth phase is between 2-10 years.
In older people, this phase is shorter. This means that a strand of hair does not grow as long before it falls off, leading to thinning hair and hair loss.
